// Anna Livia Dörr is a visual artist based in Munich.
My artistic practice is driven by a continuous investigation into the potential of various image formats, which I seek to expand through sculptural means. I use clay as a material that allows for both control and loss of control. Clay allows me to create concrete snapshots of surfaces, while at the same time, working with this material enables processes that are beyond my direct control. The drying shrinkage and chemical transformations in the kiln generate impulses whose results only manifest themselves in the ceramics.
The process involves deliberately provoking reactions in the material, while giving room for chance. This allows breaks, fragments and shifts to arise, from which individual formats develop. The fragments are rearranged and recombined to reveal relationships, tensions and spaces in between. The constituent works of the group are not complete in isolation, but rather build on each other. Existing results are revisited, reviewed, and transformed into new combinations.
I focus on hybrid forms between image, image carrier and object. These hybrids are not easily categorised. They move seamlessly between two and three dimensions, between abstract image and physical presence. Lines, edges, curves and contours are pivotal design elements that define form, structure surfaces, and create texture. They also mark boundaries and transitions.
My research focuses on the composition of images, the transformation of surfaces into narratives, and the dynamics of visual perception, ranging from the comprehensive view to the intricate details, through to the technical aspects, the material composition, the object itself, the spatial context, and the interstices between these elements.
